Democracy is not self-sustaining. Around the world – and particularly in the United States – democratic norms, institutions, and guardrails are under increasing strain. Some observers argue that what we are witnessing feels “more like a regime than an administration,” marked by strongman tactics and the erosion of long-standing protections.
Join us for a timely conversation on the state of democracy and what can be done to defend it.
We are pleased to welcome Danielle Schulkin, Director of Democracy Initiatives at Just Security, who will speak about the vital work the platform does to strengthen democratic governance, uphold the rule of law, and advance accountability. Just Security provides rigorous analysis at the intersection of law, democracy, and national security, helping policymakers, practitioners, and the public confront democratic backsliding with clarity and principle.
Our discussion will explore:
Why democracies – including the United States – may need to “import” stronger anti-corruption guardrails and pro-democracy protections
How democratic decay affects the integrity of financial systems and their regulation
The risks of corruption in emerging sectors, including crypto
Lessons from European countries where democratic institutions are under pressure, and potential collaboration with networks such as Better Finance
The event will aim not only to diagnose the problem, but to move toward solutions. Participants will be invited to help co-create a short summary document and a practical call to action following the discussion.
At a time when democratic institutions are tested by corruption, concentration of power, and attacks on accountability, this conversation asks a fundamental question: how do we reinforce the guardrails before further damage is done?
