There'll be a great line-up of speakers plus ample scope for discussion and debate. Why You Should Attend....
The Transparency Task Force invites you to a critically timed discussion in response to two major developments:
- Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ Mansion House speech on 15 July
- Our latest press statement and Open Letter warning that in just ten years, we’ve shifted “from Building Real Markets for the Good of the People” to “Building Hyped Markets for the Good of the City.”.
This all echoes a speech given by Mark Carney, then Governor of the Bank of England, in 2015, which called for markets rooted in integrity.
That ideal now feels at risk.
🎯 Why This Event Matters
The purpose of this TTF event is to discuss and evaluate the implications of Chancellor Reeves’ Mansion House speech, and the associated Leeds Reforms and regulatory announcements, which taken together sets out the governments ‘regulation for growth’ vision.
⚠️ What’s at Stake?
While the pro-growth agenda is in and of itself not a problem per se, achieving it through deregulation raises key questions for those who care about accountability and consumer rights. Of particular concern is the potential use of deregulation as an economic lever. While streamlining bureaucracy can be welcome, ill-considered deregulation risks weakening consumer safeguards—with far-reaching, negative consequences.
The Chancellor’s call for a more “agile” and “modern” regulatory framework, and her reference to strengthening UK capital markets, align with speculation about changes to redress mechanisms, including the role of the Financial Ombudsman Service. This may be linked to the widespread mishandling of the car finance mis-selling scandal—a serious failure implicating both the FCA and FOS.
We must ask:
- What kind of reform is truly in the public interest?
- Where is the line between efficiency and erosion of rights?
- How do we protect consumer protections, not just for individuals, but for the reputation of the City itself?
- How do we respond to the Mansion House Speech?
