The overall purpose of this online symposium is to shine a bright light onto the very real need for more effective measures to deal with the growing problem of pension scams

In short, far too many people are being harmed, in far too many ways and it is unrealistic to assume that everything that could be done to protect the public is being done. 

There are growing concerns about the systemic issues that seem to be at least part of the problem; a problem resulting in such a large number and very wide wide range of victims.

Our symposium is going to create a first-class opportunity for a wide range of stakeholders to share their thoughts around what needs to be done; how best to do it and who should take responsibility for fixing what seems to be broken. 

The event will be highly relevant to victims, politicians, policymakers, regulators, investigators, practitioners, campaign groups, legal professionals, the enforcement agencies and so on. 

This symposium will be one more step forward in our collective efforts to galvanise support for positive, progressive and purposeful finance reform, for the benefit of all.

Who should participate?

This online event will be of particular interest to individuals and organisations that authentically align with the idea that the financial services sector is important and that there is scope for improvement in how it works.

You can expect to be amongst progressively minded and collaboratively minded people.

On the basis that “progress begins with realism” we’ll be running the event as a forum to enable everybody to “say it as they see it.” We will be facilitating the kind of candid yet constructive discussion that is needed to help move matters forward.

We don’t think any one person or organisation has all the answers; and we also think that all answers are worth listening to, so if you’ve got a point of view that you’d like to share, and are keen to hear the views of others, this is definitely an event for you.

Head of Policy, Pensions & Investments, Lloyds Banking Group

Peter has worked with Scottish Widows for 30 years, where he has held various senior positions, including Head of Individual Pensions Propositions and Head of Workplace Pension Propositions, before becoming Head of Policy 5 years ago. 

Peter is on the Strategy Committee at TISA, The Pensions Panel at the CBI and on the Future Focus Challenge Group at the new Money & Pensions Service (MAPS), amongst other roles.   

Peter’s previous work with the Transparency Taskforce supported efforts to improve the transparency of pension charges

Lesley Carline 

Director, KGC Associates Ltd

Lesley joined KGC in 2012.  Previously, Lesley gained significant insight into the market from a provider view in the areas of pensions systems, employee benefit services and investment management.  This holistic understanding covers both trust and contract based arrangements.  She has a deep knowledge in the construction of products and services offerings within the industry.

Lesley is the immediate past President of the Pensions Management Institute (PMI) previously serving on the advisory council and its Board, she is currently on the PMI Lifetime Learning Committee and Chairs the PMI Master Trust Training Workstream. Whilst President Lesley chaired the Joint Industry Forum, working with the many different associations and industry bodies to liaise with Government bodies and regulators. Lesley is on the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Pension Scams.  Lesley features regularly as both a speaker and chair of industry events and authors topical articles on various aspects of the industry.

Lesley holds a Masters in Economic and Social History and is also a Chartered Marketeer.

Margaret Snowdon OBE

Non-executive Member of the Phoenix Group with Profits Committees and the ReAssure Fairness Committee
Non-executive Director of XPS Pension Group plc

Margaret Snowdon OBE is a pensions professional and experienced non-executive director. She is a Non-executive Member of the Phoenix Group With Profits Committees, the ReAssure Fairness Committee, as well as a Non-executive Director of XPS Pension Group plc.  She has recently stepped down after four years on the Board of the Pensions Regulator. She sits on the Advisory Board of Moneyhub Financial Technology Limited. Margaret previously held partner and director level positions with the leading employee benefit consultancies.

Among her many voluntary roles within the pensions industry, Margaret is Chair of the Pension Scams Industry Group, which has saved countless £ millions from falling into the hands of scammers.  She is the first Honorary President of the Pensions Administration Standards Association, having previously been Chair for seven years. She serves on the Council of the Pensions Policy Institute and is a Member of the Personal Finance Society’s Pensions Advice Taskforce, leads on the PASA DB Transfers Code of Practice and is a member of the STAR Steering Group.   She is also a Early Resolution Adviser with the Pensions Ombudsman service.   Margaret was appointed an OBE in 2010 and has received many awards for her contribution to Pensions.

Nigel Mills MP

Member of the Work and Pensions Secretariat Committee

Nigel Mills is a Conservative Party politician who has been the Member of Parliament for Amber Valley since the 2010 General Election.

Nigel sits on four select committees; Work and Pensions, Procedure, Backbench Business and the Committee on the Future Relationship with the European Union. Prior to his career in politics, Nigel qualified as a chartered accountant, working for both PwC and Deloitte.

In 2013, Nigel was awarded The Spectator’s Parliamentarian of the Year Award alongside fourteen other MPs.

Ruth Jones MP

Member of the APPG on Pension Scams

Born and bred on the Gaer in Newport, Ruth attended Duffryn Comprehensive School (Now John Frost School) before training to be a physiotherapist. She lives in Allt-yr-yn with her husband with her two adult children having left home.

She spent over 30 years in the National Health Service, working at Nevill Hall Hospital, Panteg Stroke Unit and Serennu Children’s Centre in Newport. Her last role before her elected to Parliament was at the  Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP). In 2007, Ruth was elected as President of the Wales Trades Union Congress (TUC).

Ruth was elected Member of Parliament for Newport West in a by-election in April 2019 and was re-elected in the 2019 General Election. In her free time she sings in a choir and volunteers at a local Night Shelter scheme in Newport City Centre.
