About the book...

The Great British Disconnect is a searing critique of the UK’s gradual detachment from its own capital markets and a call to arms for those who still believe in national economic sovereignty.

With commentary that’s as forensic as it is unsparing, Shoaib Akhtar charts the cultural, political, and institutional drift that has left Britain owning less of itself than ever before.

From the death of domestic investing to the silence of our stewards, this is not just a lament. It’s a plan and a challenge to reclaim what we’ve let slip away.

The book not only diagnoses the problem but offers a practical, unapologetic roadmap forward with ten original policy proposals to revive UK equity ownership, restore market relevance, and reconnect the nation with its own financial future.

About the author...

SHOAIB AKHTAR, CFA, FMVA

Shoaib Akhtar is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) with a decade of investment industry experience.

A graduate in Financial Services from Edinburgh Napier University, he currently works in investment management, focusing on UK and European equities.

Shoaib is the author of The Great British Disconnect: The nation that stood by as the City sold its soul, a critically acclaimed book exploring the structural decline of UK equities and the disconnection between savers and capital markets. The book was written entirely in a personal capacity and is independent of his professional role.

He regularly writes about UK equities and the future of Britain’s capital markets, emphasising that the UK’s challenge is not a lack of capital, but the failure to channel it towards rebuilding domestic robustness, resilience, and long-term growth. He will be speaking at the CFA UK Author Series in November to discuss his book.

In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his young family and is an avid cricket enthusiast, playing in the Greater Manchester Cricket League.
