The UK is one of the world’s leading financial centres — but its position as a global hub also creates vulnerabilities that can be exploited by criminals, corrupt actors and those seeking to hide illicit wealth.
Join us for a timely discussion with Jesse Griffiths, CEO of the Finance Innovation Lab and one of the authors of the new report The UK’s Dirty Money Problem: Estimating the Scale of Illicit Flows in the UK Financial System. The report examines the scale of illicit financial flows connected to the UK, including money laundering, corruption, financial crime, illegal trade and tax dodging, and explores the systemic weaknesses that allow dirty money to move through the financial system.
During this event, Jesse will discuss the report’s findings, including the challenges in measuring the true scale of illicit finance, the role of the UK’s financial system in facilitating these flows, and the reforms needed to improve transparency, accountability and enforcement.
The discussion will explore important questions including:
- How significant is the UK’s dirty money problem?
- Why do existing anti-money laundering frameworks struggle to prevent illicit flows?
- What role do regulators, financial institutions, policymakers and enforcement agencies need to play?
- What practical steps could help create a financial system that better protects society from financial crime?
This event will provide an opportunity to hear directly from one of the report’s authors and to discuss how the UK can strengthen its approach to tackling financial crime, improving transparency and restoring trust in the financial system.
